The mechanism
Soap lifts what sits on top.
Nothing else does.
Brake dust embeds into the pores of your clear coat at driving speed. Rail dust, overspray and industrial fallout bond chemically in open air. None of it is loose. A mitt slides straight over the top of it, which is why a car can look finished and still catch on your fingers.
It also explains the second thing. Wax applied over embedded contamination bonds to the grit instead of the paint, so it sheets off in weeks and you assume you bought bad wax. You didn't. You sealed dirt to your car.

The hex lattice
A molded hexagonal cell grid, not a flat rubber sheet. Each cell edge shears embedded particles off the clear coat while the open cells trap them below the contact surface, so lifted grit is carried away from your paint instead of dragged across it.
The finish pass
Dense bound-edge pile on the reverse. Wipe the lubricant residue as you go without switching tools or reaching for a second towel, and the stitched border keeps a hard seam away from the panel.

Wash and rinse first
Never clay a dirty car. Loose grit on the paint is what causes marring, not the clay. Wash, rinse, leave the panel wet.
Soak the panel in lubricant
Clay lube, detail spray, or a slick soap solution. The surface must stay visibly wet the whole pass. If you hear it drag or squeak, stop and add more.
Glide, then flip
Straight overlapping passes with no downward pressure. Let the lattice do the work. Flip to the microfiber side, wipe the residue, move to the next panel. Seal or wax after, because decontaminated paint is bare paint.
Rinse the clay face whenever it stops gliding freely. That single habit is the whole safety margin.
